Margaret Heggan Library



The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library in Sewell, NJ seeks a part-time Maintenance Worker.  With minimal supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of primarily routine tasks and some complicated tasks related to the maintenance of the building and the grounds.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES:  Performs job safely in accordance with safety procedures.  Completes general maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, wall hangings, changing light bulbs, light carpentry, and  interior painting.  Completes routine preventative maintenance tasks inside the building and on library grounds.  Makes recommendations regarding the need for outside contractors, such as licensed plumbers  and electricians. Oversees the work performed by outside contractors  as necessary.  Assembles library furniture and equipment.  Develops  and maintains inventory of spare and repair parts, materials, and  tools.  Assists with setting up chairs and tables for library events  and programs and moving other library furniture.  Assists with minor landscaping, general custodial duties, and snow shoveling.  Perform all other functions at the direction of the supervisor
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Must be mechanically inclined and skilled at completing a variety of maintenance tasks. Must be able to work independently and must be detail-oriented.  Must be knowledgeable about the proper use of a variety of tools.  The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff members and other service providers is necessary. Willingness to work a flexible schedule and to respond to supervisor within a reasonable time in the case of building emergencies is a  necessity.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND JOB EXPERIENCE:  A high school diploma is required.  Associate’s degree or completion of a technical specialty program over eighteen months and up to three years beyond high school in Building Maintenance or a related field preferred.  Ability to read, write, and speak the English language sufficiently to perform the duties of this position necessary.  At least two years of experience completing maintenance tasks in a prior work setting preferred.
